Annotation

Tanburi Cemil Bey is typically attributed as the composer of Çeçen Kızı. However this work is a folk piece from Şavşat and/or Eğin, Caucasus origins.

Tanburi Cemil Bey's famous interpretation has been transcribed numerous times and became a reference to many musicians. The transcriptions typically indicate the source as Tanburi Cemil Bey ("Tanburi Cemil Bey'den" in Turkish), which is one of the reasons why many people believe he is the original composer.

For a detailed musicological research about possible the origins of the work, please refer to the paper “Çeçen Kızı: Tracing a Tune through the Ottoman Ecumene" by Panayotis League in Portfolio of the Department of Musicology and Ethnomusicology Volume 1 (2012).
