Après avoir inauguré son mandat à la tête de l’Orchestre National de Jazz avec “Paris”, longue suite orchestrale à la fois fluide et expressionniste jetant un regard cinématique sur la ville, le guitariste, compositeur et directeur artistique Olivier Benoit poursuit son ambitieux projet “Europa” d’investigation amoureuse des grandes capitales culturelles européennes, en posant ses valises à Berlin !

Cette fois, c’est avec le détachement et la curiosité de l’“étranger” qu’il a arpenté cette ville à la population jeune, créative et cosmopolite pour en dégager ensuite, rejoint par ses musiciens, cette évocation très personnelle aux humeurs plurielles. Plus que jamais attentif à l’architecture et à ce qu’elle révèle d’un rapport plus ou moins problématique au passé, le compositeur a centré cette fois son travail sur l’histoire et la mémoire, dont la capitale allemande dans ses formes ne cesse d’exhiber et effacer les traces.
Un Berlin étrange qui porte encore en son sein les stigmates d’un XXe siècle symbole de toutes ses errances, mais se saisit des restes de ce lourd passé omniprésent pour affirmer toujours avec un peu plus de force sa réunification, son désir de liberté et d’ouverture sur le monde.

Décliné en compositions denses empruntes de lyrisme, ce portrait de Berlin interroge les diverses façons qu’ont eues les Allemands de se confronter à leur histoire récente. Olivier Benoit saisit l’esprit hétérogène de la cité à travers une musique contrastée qui exploite brillamment toutes les ressources de l’orchestre. Fidèle à ses singularités d’écriture associant dynamiques des timbres à un vrai sens de l’architecture en mouvement et une pulse rythmique hypnotique, le compositeur ouvre avec EUROPA Berlin de nouvelles perspectives tant sonores que formelles, qui puisent également dans les différents courants musicaux qui « habitent » la capitale allemande : musique minimaliste, free jazz, rock progressif et musique électronique.
