Annotation

Excerpted from booklet notes, page 2: Except for the Partita No.5, which was recorded for the CBC's international service, all the performances presented here are taken from radio broadcasts, almost always in Toronto, from 1951 to 1955. Early in May Gould signed the recording contract with Columbia Records that was quickly to make him an international celebrity but as these broadcasts make clear, he was already a mature and seasoned artist by the time the world outside Canada discovered him.
Excerpted from booklet notes, page 4: A dozen years before he retired from public concerts Gould, by anticipation, set his seal of approval on studio performances and these recordings. In a CBC TIMES interview of 1952 he said: "To me, the concentration on purely musical detail is of utmost importance for any performance, a concentration which is much easier to achieve when there is no need to feel responsibility for the visual pleasure of the listener."
